TRENTON -- Two vacant houses were damaged by a fire Saturday afternoon that officials believe started in a pile of trash outside the buildings.

The two attached houses in the 400 block of Stuyvesant Avenue were under heavy fire when firefighters arrived around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

An extra engine and ladder were called above the first alarm to help fight the blaze, which was under control within 20 minutes, Battalion Chief John Panacek said.

Officials believe the fire started outside in a pile of trash and spread to the inside of one of the vacant houses before engulfing both buildings. The blaze burned through the roof of the third floor, Panacek said.

The fire is under investigation by police.

There were no injuries.
