HAMILTON TOWNSHIP (MERCER)--During the evening of Thursday,
May 15, 2008, firefighters in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, tackled a
structure fire that authorities determined had been deliberately set. The
first floor of 38 North Johnston Avenue, which occupied the right side of a
two-story duplex, was engulfed in flames when first-due firefighters arrived
on scene about 8:40 p.m. Crews from the Hamilton (Station 14-1), Enterprise
(Station 14-2), Mercerville (Station 12), Rusling Hose (Station 13), DeCou
Hose (Station 15) and Colonial (Station 18) fire companies brought the blaze
under control in less than 20 minutes. A 58-year-old man allegedly seen
fleeing the scene was later arrested by police and charged with aggravated
arson and burglary. Authorities said the home is owned by the man’s
estranged wife and that he allegedly set the fire as part of an ongoing
domestic dispute.
