House in flames when roommates return
by Alex Zdan/The Times
WEST WINDSOR -- Three roommates arriving
home Sunday afternoon found their house on fire in what
turned into a two-alarm blaze, police said.
The roommates, who live on Washington Road, had been gone
only about 90 minutes. Police said that upon their return at
12:30 p.m. they saw fire and called 911.
The rented property suffered heavy fire damage in a kitchen
and adjacent bedroom spanning one wing of the house, police
said, with fire damage extending into the roof. There was
also water damage to the whole house.
Police said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but
is being investigated by the director of emergency services
and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, which is normal
procedure for unattended fires.
The roommates are described as a 24-year-old female, a
22-year-old female, and a 22-year-old male. A fourth
roommate, a male, was not home at the time and has not yet
returned.
Police said one of the roommates has made housing
arrangements, and that they are working with the American
Red Cross to find temporary lodging for the other two.
