Trenton (Mercer)-July 23, 2009

TRENTON — Engine 3 of the Trenton Fire Department and a Nissan Pathfinder collided yesterday at Route 129 and Cass Street, injuring a mother and her 10-year-old son in the Nissan and sending four firefighters to hospitals for protocol look-sees.

The Nissan driver, Grisela Estrada, 44, suffered hip and back injuries and a lacerated left arm, according to Detective Sgt. Pedro Medina, city police spokesman. Her 10-year-old son had head and face injuries. He was sitting in the middle of the back seat.

“The injuries were not considered life-threatening, and the victims were expected to be treated and released” from Capital Health-Fuld hospital, Medina reported.

The fire truck was responding to a 2:06 p.m. report of an overturned tractor-trailer. Driver Robert Ford had activated the truck’s lights and siren, Medina said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that Estrada was driving inattentively in the left turn lane of Route 129, passing stopped vehicles that had yielded to the fire truck,” he reported. “It appeared that Estrada failed to yield to the emergency vehicle.”

She was heading south on 129 attempting to cross Cass Street when her Pathfinder struck the fire truck on the left front end, Medina reported.

“After colliding with the fire truck the Pathfinder went out of control after rotating and came to a final uncontrolled rest after colliding with the center median traffic signal post.”

Medina said motor vehicle charges will be filed at the conclusion of Sgt. Jim Dellaira’s investigation.

Three firefighters were dropped off at Fuld by Trenton Emergency Medical Services for precautionary examinations, Fuld spokesman Don MacNeill said. They had been walking around after the crash.

A front seat passenger in the fire truck, Capt. Dave Jobes, complained of back pain and was treated at St. Francis Medical Center and released, Medina reported.
