Trenton Battles 3rd Alarm Blaze

Photos and story by: Gary Szabo

Trenton (Mercer)--Trenton firefighters battled a fierce blaze that destroyed 3 homes and damaged 3 others. Just after midnight on Saturday, Jan. 2nd, firefighters responded to a reported house fire on the city’s north side with victims trapped. Incoming units observed heavy smoke and fire in the air from blocks away.

The first arriving engine reported fire on all floors of the 3 story home with heavy smoke from 3 other  within a row of 6. They also reported a man on the roof trying to escape the fire. Using ladders, members of Ladder 4 and Rescue One quickly removed the man to safety.

As conditions worsened and the fire spread to adjacent structures; the fire grew to 3 alarms bringing in additional resources to battle the blaze which were fought under freezing temperatures and high winds.

It took over an hour to bring the fire under control, but crews remained on scene until morning while investigators tried to determine the cause. One firefighter received minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
